In the UK, the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and Exemptions Order 2015 outlines Physiotherapy for animals must be provided by a suitably qualified individual and requires a referral from the animal’s registered Veterinary Surgeon.

The RCVS provided supporting guidance in 2021 detailing that physiotherapy for the maintenance & performance of an animal, and not for the management of a specific injury/condition, no longer requires a Veterinary referral and falls within the remit of an appropriately trained and insured musculoskeletal therapist.
